What is Krill?
Krill are small, translucent shrimp with luminescent organs that inhabit the cold waters of Antarctica. Krill serve as food for whales, seals and seabirds. The very cold waters of Antarctica, regularly covered by ice and relatively unpolluted are a perfect breeding ground for krill.
In Asia and Russia, humans have consumed dried krill for a long time, and in Japan, it is used as an ingredient in some starters (soups, salads) and fresh krill is also popular in gastronomy. It was only recently that a process for extracting krill oil – allowing it to preserve its nutritional qualities – was patented, marking the start of the commercialization of this incredible oil.
Nutritional assets
Krill oil is a fatty substance, so its main nutritional benefits come from the fatty acids or lipid substances it contains.
It is its high concentration in Omega 3 which is particularly worth the success of krill oil. However, its raw omega 3 content is slightly lower than that of other oily fish oils with 75 mg of EPA and 45 mg of DHA per 500 mg capsule, compared to 90 mg of EPA and 60 mg of DHA for fish oils. However, krill oil also contains antioxidants and phospholipids (40%) which preserve the integrity of omega 3 and increase their effectiveness.
The main antioxidant in krill oil is astaxanthin, a fat-soluble pro-vitamin A, which belongs to the carotenoid family.
Krill oil also contains vitamins E, A and D, as well as copper, iron and zinc.
